Review--Vision in Silver by Anne Bishop

The Others freed the cassandra sangue to protect the blood prophets from exploitation, not realizing their actions would have dire consequences. Now the fragile seers are in greater danger than ever before; both from their own weaknesses and from those who seek to control their divinations for wicked purposes. In desperate need of answers, Simon Wolfgard, a shape-shifter leader among the Others, has no choice but to enlist blood prophet Meg Corbyn’s help, regardless of the risks she faces by aiding him.

Meg is still deep in the throes of her addiction to the euphoria she feels when she cuts and speaks prophecy. She knows each slice of her blade tempts death. But Others and humans alike need answers, and her visions may be Simon’s only hope of ending the conflict.

For the shadows of war are deepening across the Atlantik, and the prejudice of a fanatic faction is threatening to bring the battle right to Meg and Simon’s doorstep…

After almost three years I return to Anne Bishop’s world of The Others and I found I quite missed visiting the Lakeside Courtyard! Vision in Silver continues the story of Meg, Simon, and a whole laundry list of other people, Other and human alike as they try to live together in a world where there are many prejudices against the terra indigene.

Things between humans and terra indigene are definitely heating up, and not in a good way. The Humans First and Last group are getting bolder in their advances to take away everything from the terra indigene. They are a group of humans who think very highly of themselves and want to “take back their world” from the Others, but what they don’t realize is that the Others are letting them live here. There’s also more development from the other cassandra sangues that were rescued from all over. Many of them are struggling to adapt to life outside their prisons.

In the meantime, Meg has been getting the urge to cut more and more. Prophecies are demanding to be seen and heard and one of them involves Monty’s daughter who mysteriously shows up at Lakeside one day and there’s a larger mystery involved with her that is revealed over the course of the novel.

What’s hard to describe about this book is what actually happens. It’s a slower paced kind of read, but the story is more character focused than anything. I surprise myself by how much I enjoy it as I do sometimes prefer more action in my story than not. Here, there is some action, but not as much as one would think.

The story revolves around the relationship between humans and the terra indigene that is slowly falling apart. A variety of nasty humans are thinking they are the dominant species here and want to take out the Others. In some ways, the story is also about Meg as she tries to lead a normal life. Or as normal of a life as possible.

I still keep hoping for some Simon and Meg romance, but it’s definitely something that is being built up gradually. At least I hope that’s what Anne is doing! I still have two more novels to read at this point, so there’s still loads room for more!

I will admit, this is a hard series to get into if you’re looking for a fast-paced, action packed, tension inducing kind of read! While this series has a nice deal of action and tension, it isn’t fast-paced in the least. It’s a gradual buildup to things, but in the meantime while waiting things to happen, lots of little things occur while we get to meet a lot of different people! True, trying to keep track of all the characters (and my 3 year gap from time away) can get a little frustrating, but for the most part I am able to see who is good and who is not so good. This is definitely a series for readers who enjoy a character driven series because this series has that in spades!

  1. I have read this book at least 2 times in paper form. And I plan to re-read again, every time a new title comes out in this series. Plus, it is easier to take with me when I travel.
